Teaching Spelling Effectively, Yrs F-6, with Diane Snowball
Online Event
Event description
This online workshop across two consecutive days is for motivated Years F-6 teachers and leaders of literacy who want to equip themselves with the skills to enrich the teaching of spelling. Learn how to powerfully develop students as self-motivated, self-directed and self-regulated learners, transferring their spelling to their writing.
WHY?
- As teachers we can struggle with teaching spelling in purposeful ways and ensuring a transfer to writing
- We are unsure as to all of the strategies that are required for spelling
- We struggle with teaching spelling in an investigative, risk taking way that links with reading and writing
- We would like to teach more about words - using patterns, relationships, derivations - but need more help
- We find it hard to plan for spelling across a school in a coordinated way, and want to avoid using programs
HOW?
This workshop addresses the struggles we have through showing:
DAY 1 SESSION
- How to establish a purpose for children to learn about spelling, ensuring a transfer to writing
- How to encourage risk taking as part of the learning
- That English orthography requires studying the morphemes (meaning) of words plus the study of phonemes (sounds)
- How children learn all of the strategies required for spelling
- The usefulness of onset-rime work and other phonemic awareness development
- How to teach children how to learn words, including high frequency words, establishing an alphabetic word wall
- How to teach children how to proofread and choose personal words to learn
DAY 2 SESSION
- How to teach about words: investigations about sound symbol relationships, common spelling patterns, prefixes and suffixes, derivatives and etymology
- How to focus on word building from base words
- How to analyse children’s writing to understand their spelling strengths and needs plus knowing what to do about their needs
- How to establish a school spelling plan, plus year level plans
