Event description

Teaching STEM & HASS with educational drones & other geospatial applications

She Maps
is excited to invite teachers to a full-day workshop aimed at demonstrating how to use programmable drones and non-drone-based geospatial applications in their teaching. Thanks to a grant provided by the University of Queensland, we are able to make this professional development available free of charge.

The workshop is designed for any teacher new to teaching with drones, as well as those who are familiar with drones but wish to adopt a more pedagogical approach to teaching with modern technologies. Our experience has demonstrated that incorporating drones into STEM and HASS classes leads to greater student engagement, especially among those who may not naturally gravitate towards these subjects. This approach fosters a more diverse and inclusive classroom environment. Teachers will learn how to create safe and inclusive learning environments in which students learn to fly and code drones and use drone technologies to solve real-world STEM & HASS challenges, as well as learn about the career opportunities within the rapidly growing geospatial industry and what this means for current students. We can't wait to have teachers flying with us!

What you will learn during our workshop

  • Types & application of drones in the modern workforce
  • Unconscious gender bias and the importance of inclusive language

"That was the most engaging PD I've done in a long time. Flying with drones and learning about the applications and seeing some of the real-world examples of people working in the industry was really inspirational for me. -Simon Miller, Vice Chair Australian Geography Teachers Association
