Teenage Art Class (Ages 12+) with Jess Portsmouth T4

A great class for teens who really want to learn much more about art-making, art history, refine and extend their skills in drawing to develop their own style.
What will be covered in this course?
This is a fundamental course for teens, offering exposure to a range of drawing mediums and gain a deeper understanding of drawing techniques. Students will start off by learning the process of drawing with pencils: Basic Shapes, line, tone/shadow, detail and how to achieve various effects using graphite. This will be done by looking at a simple still life and observational drawing. Then we will apply this knowledge to other forms such as looking at perspective, drawing the figure, learning about portraits and getting really good at using a variety of wet and dry drawing materials such as pencil, charcoal, chalk pastels, ink, oil pastels and more.
By the end of this course students will:
Students will be encouraged to express themselves and start thinking about the themes behind their arts practise and what they wish to convey through a work.
By the end of the course they will have a deeper understanding of the underlying principles of design that determine the effectiveness of their work and how to manipulate them to create more engaging works. Students will have a a number of fully realised works and confidence in their creative direction.

Students will need to bring:
- Wear enclosed shoes
- Optional: “Paint clothes”
- A3 drawing paper 110gsm or Higher (15 sheets)
- A3 Mixed Media or Watercolour paper 220gsm or higher (10-15 Sheets)
- A3 folder for artwork storage
ABOUT THE TUTOR
Jess is a professional artist, face painter and published author. She has exhibited and sold her works both locally and internationally. She studied a Bachelor of Fine Art and has a Diploma of Visual Arts at Tafe NSW.
She has been working with children and teaching the arts for over 5 years. She founded Woolgoolga Art School in 2023, is a professional face painter on the weekends and runs private Paint & Sip parties.
In her personal arts practise she primarily works with acrylic paints, graphite, charcoal & pastels, depicting the human form.
As a mental health advocate, Jess is passionate about the therapeutic benefits of art making. She has a certificate in Art Therapy and her approach to teaching is a mixture of technical tuition, encouraging creative experimentation and building self esteem.
Her classes focus on establishing the foundations of art theory and then applying that knowledge to artworks.
