Jeniekah’s Journey to Recovery:
At just 13 years old, Jeniekah's world changed forever.
A proud Bundjalung Grafton girl, Jeniekah loves camping, riding motorbikes, spending time on the Clarence River with her family and learning about her culture. She had just started Year 8 and was looking forward to a year filled with friends, school and new adventures when she was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer.
Within days, Jeniekah and her family left everything behind in Grafton and relocated to Queensland Children's Hospital, where she began intensive treatment. Despite months of chemotherapy and complex surgery to save her leg, the cancer continued to spread and the family was informed that it was more aggressive then the team had thought and unfortunately only responded from treatment at a 5% kill rate. Her family was faced with the devastating decision to proceed with an emergency amputation to give Jeniekah the best chance of beating this disease. Following this surgery Jeniekah continued chemotherapy & and a bone marrow transplant that involved four weeks in hospital and being isolated unable to see her little brother and extended family due to thia treatment taking out all her cells and immune system, sadly Jeniekah spent her fourteenth birthday undergoing this treatment.
Today, Jeniekah continues to fight with incredible courage currently waiting to see if she will be selected for a trial that will involve ongoing chemotherapy for a Following six months.
Jeniekah is adapting to life as an amputee and continues the long journey of rehabilitation as she learns to walk again with a prosthetic leg.
While Jeniekah focuses on recovery, her family has spent months living away from home. They have had to put work, school and everyday family life on hold while facing significant travel, accommodation, medical and living expenses.
Jeniekah is a brave young women that is determined to come home and continue her life by the Clarence River surrounded by her friends and family.
