Why are we doing this?

Times are challenging and our world is going through big changes. Now that everything is online and AI, its a great reminder to celebrate being human, the creativity that comes from within ourselves and our face-to-face connections in community. Let's make a difference by having a fun and inclusive evening together.

Fund-raising:

This event is a fund-raiser for Jeniekah, a strong Bundjalung /Gumbayngirr girl from Grafton who is currently having treatment for Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer. We would like to offer her our thoughts and prayers while Jeniekah is in Queensland Children's Hospital. Our tickets and donations will support Jeniekah and her family with travel, accommodation, medical and living expenses during this incredibly challenging time. Please read a recent update and more information about Jeniekah's journey below.

100 % of all donations will go to Janiekah and her family.

Jeniekah, a young Bundjalung girl, she is smiling and happy.

RSVP:

It would be great if you could please RSVP by Thursday, 29th October, so we have an idea of numbers. If you're a more spontaneous type, take your chances and hope there's enough room on the night. It's difficult to predict how many will attend, although I'm sure many people will want to support Jeniekah.

Click RSVP to register, you have the option to pay by bank transfer and/or bring cash on the night for the donation bucket.

The open mike:

  • We welcome any and all creative outlets that could be presented to a small group, - 3 - 5 minutes each.

  • Sing a song, play an instrument, do a dance, tell a story, perform a dramatic skit, maybe you have some laughs up your sleeve, "show and tell" about something of significance for you - perhaps a "piece de resistance" a piece of art that inspires you; or practice your public speaking and try out an inspiring speech.

  • You are welcome to enjoy the evening from the safety of your seat, performers always need an encouraging audience

  • Please keep in mind that children may be present, so best to use family-friendly content.

  • We intend to create a warm, encouraging and supportive atmosphere - I'm sure you'll all agree! So we hope to give each of the performers our full attention.

  • Please let us know in advance if you have something to show us, so we have an idea of numbers - although spontaneous performers are always very welcome too.

Children:

  • Children are our greatest teachers when it comes to creativity.. I hope you will understand these ideas around children and this event.

  • Children are very welcome if you believe:

    • your child/ children would be interested in taking part

    • your child/ children are able to play quietly with their own activity

    • If you happen to have a beautiful baby or toddler, you can gauge the situation regarding performances and hop outside for a bit if they're upset

We believe in supporting local, ethical small businesses + community and environmental causes:

  • Welcome to display your cards or flyers here

  • Especially themes around hand-made wares, earth-friendly affairs, building community or the arts.

Jeniekah’s Journey to Recovery

At just 13 years old, Jeniekah's world changed forever.

A proud Bundjalung Grafton girl, Jeniekah loves camping, riding motorbikes, spending time on the Clarence River with her family and learning about her culture. She had just started Year 8 and was looking forward to a year filled with friends, school and new adventures when she was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer.

Within days, Jeniekah and her family left everything behind in Grafton and relocated to Queensland Children's Hospital, where she began intensive treatment. Despite months of chemotherapy and complex surgery to save her leg, the cancer continued to spread and the family was informed that it was more aggressive then the team had thought and unfortunately only responded from treatment at a  5% kill rate. Her family was faced with the devastating decision to proceed with an emergency amputation to give Jeniekah the best chance of beating this disease. Following this surgery Jeniekah continued chemotherapy & and a bone marrow transplant that involved four weeks in hospital and being isolated unable to see her little brother and extended family due to thia treatment taking out all her cells and immune system, sadly Jeniekah spent her fourteenth birthday undergoing this treatment.

Today, Jeniekah continues to fight with incredible courage currently waiting to see if she will be selected for a trial that will involve  ongoing chemotherapy for a Following six months.

Jeniekah is adapting to life as an amputee and continues the long journey of rehabilitation as she learns to walk again with a prosthetic leg.

While Jeniekah focuses on recovery, her family has spent months living away from home. They have had to put work, school and everyday family life on hold while facing significant travel, accommodation, medical and living expenses.

Jeniekah is a brave young women that is determined to come home and continue her life by the Clarence River surrounded by her friends and family.
