Telling Tales #3 is a fundraising event for Women in Media Victoria's early career mentoring program. This hugely successful scheme has connected women all over Victoria with seasoned professionals to ensure that they are well supported in the formative stage of their career. 

The night will feature 5 fantastic women in media who will share a 5 minute story from their career. 

Inspired by The Moth, these stories can be funny, sad, scary, inspiring and on any theme - the key is that they're true!

Drink and nibbles are included in the ticket price so please arrive at 6pm to enjoy a drink and meet some of your fellow Women in Media! The speakers will begin at 7pm.

Speaker Details

Matilda Boseley, The Guardian
Matilda Boseley is an award-winning (and losing) cross-platform reporter, and presenter for Guardian Australia. She has spearheaded the publication's popular TikTok channel where she writes and hosts their short-form news explainers. Her work on the platform has won her a Quill award for Innovation in Journalism and was nominated for a Walkley for the same category. She previously worked as a reporter and assistant chief of staff and 7 News Melbourne and as a Breaking News Reporter for The Age newspaper. She was previously named Walkley Student Journalist of the Year for 2019

Jen Sharpe, Founder and Managing Director, Think HQ
Jen is a formidable communicator, driven by her values and her passion for her team. She is the sole founder and managing director of Think HQ and oversees all projects from inception through to evaluation. Jen is currently the B&T Executive Leader, PRIA Industry Leader of the Year an CommsCon PR Leader of the Year.
She has over 20 years experience in managing national, state and local communications campaigns. In addition to her communications experience, she is a politics and policy nerd, and understands the very important intersect between social policy and communications in any effective behaviour change campaign.  She is also a businesswoman who thrives on growing the Think HQ business.

Catherine Jonathan, Founder and director, Emerging Brands Africa
Catherine is the Founder and director of Emerging Brand Africa. A PR and Brands Agency dedicated to raising the profile of African-Australian businesses and their Allied partners. She recently launched the first-ever EmBA Magazine and an African Brands Catalogue/AU.
Catherine previously worked with Multinational Corporates in Africa, where she held several roles in PR and Marketing. She has an MBA and a Bachelor’s degree in Communications.
Catherine is a Regional Advisory Council member of the Victorian Multicultural Commission and sits on various African professional forums. 
Catherine’s goal is to influence change through bold alliances.

Emma Dean, Author, Presenter & Cook
Emma Dean is an Australian cook, forager, author and TV presenter.
She shot to fame as the winner of MasterChef in 2013.
Her first cookbook A Homegrown Table was published in December 2013.
Emma’s passion for food began in the paddocks and kitchen of her regional Victoria childhood home. Her parents instilled a love of growing and cooking farm-fresh produce.
Recently she presented the award winning show, Eat Well Christmas with Emma Dean, for Channel 9 and hosts Eat Well TV.

Belinda Hawkins, Journalist and author, ABC Australian Story
Belinda is great at telling other people's stories on the ABC's Australian Story program, so we look forward to hearing a tale of her own. Belinda started out as a high school teacher but moved across to journalism after three years, finding her calling in the ABC newsroom and then the 7.30 Report. She defected to SBS for 10 years, reporting for Dateline and Insight, creating half-hour documentaries from around the world, before returning to the ABC.  
In 2013 she published the acclaimed Every Parent’s Nightmare, based on the story of Jock Palfreeman, who in 2007 was arrested in Bulgaria and charged with murder of a law student.
Belinda was a founding member of the Women in Media group in Victoria and helped establish its excellent mentoring program. She has won many awards for her documentary work, including four United Nations Media Peace Awards, and at least two Walkley Awards.

Denise Eriksen, co-founder Media Mentors
Denise is Co-Founder of Media Mentors (Australia) - a company designed to help creatives build sustainable careers. They specialise in individual mentoring, producing networking events, production, helping companies set up in Australia and running workshops.
Through this company she is putting her thorough knowledge of the broadcasting market in Australia and New Zealand - and  strong track record in generating ideas, spotting talent and delivering successful content on all platforms, at all budget levels - to good use. As well as using the business development skills gained in senior management positions at ABC and SBS to grow the organisations through partnerships with major industry players.
