Tenderloin Architectural Treasures Walking Tour with Linda Day

Explore the rich architectural history of the Tenderloin on a guided walking tour that highlights the neighborhood’s early 20th-century building boom. Between 1906 and 1929, a small group of talented local architects helped shape the Tenderloin’s distinctive character, designing elegant apartments, hotels, and theaters in a range of styles—from Beaux-Arts to Moorish Revival.

This walk, led by historian Linda Day, will feature eight architectural gems by noted designers including Rousseau and Rousseau, T. Patterson Ross, C.O. Clausen, H.C. Bauman, and others. Along the way, you’ll see striking examples of Renaissance, Spanish Colonial, and Gothic Revival ornamentation that give the neighborhood its enduring charm.

Stops include the Marchbank Apartments (1917, James Francis Dunn), the Alcazar Theater (1917, T. Patterson Ross), the Farrellworth Apartments (1928, H.C. Bauman), and other remarkable structures such as the Alhambra and Castle Apartments, each showcasing the artistry and ambition of San Francisco’s post–earthquake era.
