Event description

Join local ceramicist Kim Holmes of Earthen Ceramics at an evening wheel throwing class, for beginners or new potters, focusing on surface design.

Kim has a tertiary qualification in visual arts, a post graduate diploma in teaching and has immersed herself in the world of ceramics for 5+ years. Kim teaches this beginners wheel class and has a small but bustling home studio @earthernceramicsaotearoa. Her background includes working with youth and the disability sector. 

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to prepare and centre clay on an electric pottery wheel.

  • Throw and trim tumblers, small bowls and side plates.

  • Decorate your creations using sgraffito surface design technique and glaze your items with dipping technique.

When & Where:

  • Day: Wednesday

  • Dates: 27th August, 3rd September, 10th September and 24th September (no class 17th September)

  • Time: 06:00 PM – 8:00 PM each week

  • Location: Nelson Community Potters, 136 Rutherford Street

What to Bring:

  • A towel and an apron.

  • A creative spirit and willingness to get a little bit dirty!

  • 3kg of clay is included in the ticket price, after that clay can be purchased for $5 per kg from your tutor.

Your finished pieces will be glazed and available to collect up to 3 weeks after the class finish date.
