Event description

The Essington School, Darwin is hosting TESEP Professional Development Workshops on Thursday 18 September 2025 from 9.00am to 3.00pm on the TESEP rock and critical minerals kits with integrated resources, Critical Minerals, Life, Fossils and the 5 Big Extinctions, Wet Rocks, Our Place in Space, and practical exercises like the geological time-tape.

Rock and Critical Minerals Kits

Introduction to the Rock and Critical Minerals Kits and the plate tectonics poster and integrated teaching (rock, mineral and big picture plate tectonics stories). This PD will include hands-on exercises and focus on Year 8.

Life, Fossils and the 5 Big Extinctions

This PD will look at the 5 big mass extinctions through geological time and what might have caused them-using fossils. We will look at the evolutionary niches that were created by some of these extinctions, including the rise of hominids. Episodes include: Introduction to Fossils, Evolution and Extinctions; Fossils and Astrobiology; Fossils and Plate Tectonics; Hominid Evolution; Economic Fossils; and Micro-fossils. Biology crossover. Years 5-6 and Years 7-12.

Wet Rocks

This PD examines the importance of groundwater in the story of the hydrological cycle and its role in everything from Artesian Basins, hanging swamps, and sustainably. The PD also looks at some of the ecological impacts on the hanging swamps in the Blue Mountains in NSW. Relevant to Years 6 to 8 relevant with geography crossover.

Our Place in Space

Our Place in Space discusses the evolution of Earth, Solar System and Milky Way. This webinar will investigate the Solar System's journey through our galaxy, meteorites, the formation of the moon, the impacts of the Earth’s rotation and tilted axis. Our Place in Space is also ideal for teaching physics (i.e., Earth gravity as an attractive force, Newton's laws of motion). Relevant to Years 7-10.


Cost:

  • attendee from Host School – $35 plus GST and booking fees.

  • attendee from another School / Institution – $50 plus GST and booking fees.

There are two payment methods (if required for attendees):

  • payment by credit card on registration

  • payment by direct deposit from invoice after the event (note, payment by credit card from invoice is not possible).
