The Pest Free Waitākere Ranges Alliance is hosting a hui on the innovative ways drones are transforming conservation. From monitoring to restoration, drones bring new efficiency and precision. This hui will showcase practical examples of drone technology in action, highlighting how aerial data informs decisions and amplifies conservation impact. Whether you’re a volunteer, part of a community group, or simply curious about how technology supports conservation, this hui offers insight, inspiration, and a glimpse into the future of environmental management.
Our speakers:
Hugo Geddes, Senior Bio Information Analyst with Auckland Council
Hugo leads innovative projects that blend environmental science with technology. With a background in physical geography and spatial ecology, Hugo oversees the council’s drone programme and serves as Chief Pilot under Civil Aviation Authority Part 102 certification. His work focuses on using data and digital tools to support ecological restoration and conservation efforts across the region.
Dr Rebecca Rogers, Spatial Ecologist and Lecturer at Auckland University of Technology
With a background in technoecology, wildlife management, and environmental mapping. Rebecca's work focuses on applying technologies like drones, GIS, and remote sensing to tackle complex ecological data challenges and better care for wildlife and our environment. She is passionate about projects that combine technology, community capacity building, and ecological monitoring using technology to care for the environment, but also to share stories about land, people, and culture.
Rebecca's talk will be on "Technology-enhanced community restoration."
