Description
Join us Tuesday, May 5 at 6:30PM at the Bryant Library with Dr. Joanne Grasso to discuss the American Revolution on Long Island.
In this 250th anniversary year of America, Dr. Joanne Grasso, author and historian, will be speaking about her book, "The American Revolution on Long Island." when she explores Long Island at war during the American Revolution.
After George Washington's defeat at the Battle of Long Island in August 1776, seven years of British occupation began. Patriot sympathizers were subject to oaths of loyalty, theft of property, and the quartering of British soldiers in their homes. Prison ships off of Wallabout Bay in Brooklyn were used for the Patriots while acts of sabotage by the Patriots were used against the British and the Loyalists. Washington's Culper Spy Ring developed an intricate web of people to track movements of the British." It was an intense time of Patriots versus Loyalists when only the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783 brought relief.
