The Architecture of Care
Event description
The FDW Design Film Festival film Things Will Be Different draws attention to the demolition of public housing and the resulting displacement of communities.
Meanwhile, the shortage of affordable and social housing in cities around the world continues to grow. The UN says 1.6 billion people globally lack adequate housing and basic services.
An alternative to demolition is retrofitting, which retains existing housing and supports decarbonisation in the face of a climate emergency, material scarcity and a global cost-of-living crisis.
Join architects Nic Brunsdon (Brunsdon Studio) and Kieran Wong (Chair of Shelter WA) in conversation about these issues and how we can address them locally. Nic will present research and test cases from Brunsdon Studio's paper ‘The Architecture of Care’, including its proposal for the retrofit of Stirling Towers in Highgate.
What are the values behind this reparative model and alternative to demolition? How can we extend the concept of retrofitting beyond the physical structures and materiality of our cities while encompassing systemic changes? Join the conversation.
