The Architecture of Solid Characters with Eugen Bacon

We build characters in our stories to ‘make it real’. The characters in our fiction bring our story to life. It’s their personality, quest and perspective that helps drive the plot forward. We interact with them—they bridge the writer’s connection between the fictional world and the reader. So it’s crucial to build robust characters that readers can connect with.

Learning outcomes

As part of this workshop, you will learn:

• Why it's important to build the characters in your story

• How to build robust characters in your fiction

• Understanding point of view: whose head are you in?

• A range of ways in which to shape characterisation, including building character by description, personality type, dialogue, voice and action

Format

This is an online workshop with a focus on writing craft; it will be hosted via Zoom. This workshop is suitable for writers of all levels and writing backgrounds.
      

About Eugen

Eugen Bacon is an African Australian author. She’s a Solstice, British Fantasy, Locus and Foreword Indies Award winner, a twice World Fantasy and Shirley Jackson Award finalist, and a finalist in the Philip K. Dick and Ignyte Awards, and the Nommo Awards for speculative fiction by Africans. Eugen is an Otherwise Fellow, and was also announced in the honor list for ‘doing exciting work in gender and speculative fiction’.
