The Art of Accompaniment with Dave O’Neill and Lindsay Martin
You probably play and sing a bit, or maybe a lot. Perhaps you’re just a backing muso for other singers. Here’s a unique opportunity to improve your skills and learn from two of the best in the business.
Join acclaimed career accompanists Dave O’Neill and Lindsay Martin for a relaxed, hands-on musical workshop exploring the art of accompaniment, improvisation, and playing with/around singers. Drawing on decades of real-world experience, Dave and Lindsay will share practical tools for listening deeply, supporting songs, and finding your musical voice in collaborative settings.and you’ll have lots of laughs too.
Open to players of any instrument, this workshop is designed for musicians with basic to intermediate skills - if you are confident playing a few scales, know a few tunes or songs, and are keen to grow, you’re welcome. Sessions will focus on how to listen for groove, harmony and responsiveness, helping to build your confidence in finding space when playing with others.
The workshop will take place in Cobargo, 13-15 November 2026 at the School of Arts Hall. Whether you’re a folkie, jazz cat, classical escapee, or curious musical magpie, this weekend is about expanding your musical toolkit and becoming a more versatile, empathetic, and adventurous accompanist.

ARTISTS
DAVE O’NEILL
Internationally recognised as one of Australia’s most respected and in-demand multi-instrumentalists, Dave has worked as a professional musician and teacher for decades. He plays fiddle, mandolin, guitar, ukulele, banjo and sings.
With a career spanning over 50 years he has performed countless live shows, and accompanied many of the nation's leading country, folk and contemporary artists including Eric Bogle, The Bushwackers, Jimmy Barnes, Fred Smith and Enda Kenny. He has also toured and recorded overseas with a number of internationally acclaimed artists in America and Europe. He is well known in the Australian folk scene, both as a musician and as a former Artistic Director of the National Folk Festival.

LINDSAY MARTIN
Lindsay is best known for his particularly sensitive and unique violin accompaniment and work as an independent recording engineer and producer. Though classically trained from the age of seven, he developed an uncanny ability to improvise and weave around performers in any genre.
A career musician, he has many strings to his bow and many projects to his name: He has performed alongside many celebrated musicians including Enda Kenny, Ciaran Gribbin (INXS), Wendy Matthews and The Bushwackers. Lindsay has hosted countless violin masterclasses and workshops at festivals and music education camps across Australia and New Zealand, and established his own studio, recording and producing works for both local and international organisations and touring artists through the years. He’s also a multi-instrumentalist, former closet vocalist, trout hunter, unintentional hair model and medieval archer.
Though recognised widely as an excellent accompanist, his song-crafting and vocal abilities never had an outlet until he formed We Mavericks with partner Victoria Vigenser.
