The Art of Argumentation in the Age of Social Media
Event description
If social media feels a bit overwhelming at times, that's because it is. Our minds were not designed to process the deluge of information, opinions, expectations and moral attitudes that are hurled at us each day through social media. This new informational landscape is not only taxing, but it's polarising. Social media presents us with dozens of diverse moral and political attitudes and urges us to form our own opinion. And in doing so, we can get into conflict, both online and offline. This talk will explore the challenging moral landscape of social media, look at how it is driving polarising and extreme views, and gives some practical tips on how to manage moral disagreement and constructive argumentation in the real and online worlds.
