KSP Online Workshop: The Art of Symbolic Storytelling
Event description
Have you ever wondered how a tortoise could carry centuries of wisdom on its back? Or how a cracked pot might teach us something profound about beauty and resilience?
Join us for a one-of-a-kind writing workshop that explores the rich world of symbolic storytelling across cultures and generations. Guided by writer and researcher Bimbo Bakare, this hands-on online session invites emerging writers, creatives, and lovers of story to uncover the deeper meaning behind animals, objects, and landscapes in narrative.
Drawing from African, Aboriginal, and global storytelling traditions, youβll gain practical tools to enrich your writing voice, unlock new layers of meaning, and craft symbolic tales of your own.
In this workshop, you will discover:
The power and purpose of symbolism in narrative
How cultural archetypes shape stories across the world
Folktales and symbolic stories, including The Cracked Pot, The Shell on the Shore, and a tale from Things Fall Apart
Writing prompts and exercises to help you develop your own myth or symbolic journey
A warm, inclusive space to reflect, write, and share
Who is workshop for?
Writers of all levels (from journal scribblers to published authors) who are curious about the deeper dimensions of storytelling and the enduring role of symbols across time and culture.

About the Facilitator:
Oluwaseun (Bimbo) Bakare, a Nigerian traveller and storyteller, has two unpublished works about his Australian adventures. His first, "Crossing Borders," chronicles his journey through the Australian outback, offering a unique perspective on the country's culture, nature, and personal experiences. Inspired by Ibn Battuta, Bimbo aims to encourage more Africans to explore Australia. His second, "Adventure Beckons," delves deeper into Australia's North-West region. Bimbo's writing style is engaging and informative, inviting readers to embark on their own adventures. He is currently working on a third book, "Agbekoya Uprising," which explores the late-1960s uprising in Western Nigeria, providing a deeper understanding of the country's past.
Come with curiosity, leave with inspiration - and a new set of tools to enrich your creative work.
This workshop is proudly hosted by the Katharine Susannah Prichard Writersβ Centre, sponsored by Creative Australia through the 2025 Caruso Writer-in-Residence Program and supported by the Shire of Mundaring.
