The Baby Decision and Beyond: Reimagining family in an unstable world
Description
The baby decision is getting harder than ever, as multiple crises make our future feel scary and insecure. Many of us recognize that community is critical to our safety and happiness, but we struggle to break out of the typical nuclear family structure that we are all told to strive for, despite its limitations.
This workshop is designed for people who are asking themselves: do I want to raise a child in this world? What might community look like outside of the nuclear family? If I don’t have a partner and/or child, who will my community of care be? If I do have a child, who will help me?
We will be joined by two incredible speakers:
Anna Louie Sussman is a journalist reporting on gender, economics, health, and reproduction, and a contributing Opinion writer at The New York Times. She is the author of the book Inconceivable: The Impossibility of Family in an Age of Uncertainty, which looks at the challenges people face in starting and growing their families.
Diana Adams founded the Chosen Family Law Center to help form healthy, stable families, whether between same-sex couples, platonic co-parents, polyamorous families, or different-sex couples, by facilitating conversations that support the creation of clear personal agreements, as well as solid legal agreements to protect their families. Their first book, Chosen Family: A Guide to Building Your Village Beyond the Nuclear Family, is coming out in February.
