The BOAT: an improv jam
Description
The BOAT (Best of All Time) is a community improv jam for all skill levels. Get some character and scene reps in while connecting with improvisors from all over the Bay Area. This jam is school-agnostic meaning that performers of any improv style are welcome to participate.
The suggested and no-pressure donation of $5 (plus fees) goes a long way to sustaining this low-to-no cost community event but no one is turned away for lack of funds. 100% of the funds from ticket sales go directly back into covering the overhead of hosting the jam at Eclectic Box.
Hosted by veteran improvisor Cody Frost, The BOAT hopes to help you with the Sunday Scaries and bring some laughter and joy to your heart.
Note: Tickets to this jam are free. If you'd like to donate beforehand, please select "Yes, and!" when RSVPing. Other donations will be accepted at the door.
FAQs
- How do I sign up to particpate?
All sign-ups will be in person, at the door. Arrive around 5:45pm before the Jam begins and put your name and/or team in one of the available slots. Easy as that.
- What if I've never performed improv before?
Firstly, there is no pressure to get on stage. We want you to be ready and willing to join us whenever you feel prepared to do so.
If you do decide to participate, just introduce yourself to the host and they will go over all the details of the jam and what you might need to keep in mind. Our main host Cody Frost has been hosting improv jams for over five years and has introduced this collaborative art form to many new players.
- What if I sign up to participate but change my mind?
No problem. If the host calls your name but you aren't feeling it, just stay in your seat. The host won't wait for you to come down, and won't pressure you either. We want your participation to be one of excitement, fun, and laughter—we'll meet you on stage when you're ready.
- Can I just watch the jam?
Absolutely. We welcome people who are interested in improv or are curious about what a jam is. We do want you to know that a jam isn't the same as a show. Here, there will be performers of all skill levels—from no experience to seasoned veterans—and that's part of the fun!
Through the collaboration of differently skilled performers, everyone learns and grows to be better in different ways.
- What is the Woman & Non-Binary Jam?
This is the open call portion of the Jam, welcoming anyone who identifies with these groups to come down and get a little more stage time. It is a small but important way to elevate voices and hold space for members within our community to be able to play with one another.
Note: There is no special sign up for this section of the Jam. If you identify and want to participate, we'd love to see you on stage!
