Join IMA Education for a morning exploring ‘the churchie’ emerging art prize 2022.
Discover the curriculum aligned education resources developed for the exhibition with IMA Education Manager Nadine Schmoll, to build connections with contemporary art and artists for your students.
The event includes an exhibition tour by emerging curator Elena Dias-Jayasinha and a hands-on workshop by Indigenous textile artist and ‘the churchie’ finalist Norton Fredericks.
Suitable for secondary teachers. Tea and coffee provided. Professional development certificates can be provided on request.

About the Exhibition
The churchie emerging art prize, or ‘the churchie’, is one of Australia’s leading prizes for emerging artists. The finalists’ exhibition provides a survey of the compelling and diverse work being produced by early-career artists today.
This year’s finalists represent a broad spread of artistic concerns and mediums spanning painting, textiles, video, drawing, installation, and more.
About the Workshop
Discover the art and science of dyeing textiles using natural sources. Norton will share his perspective on responding to place and applying a contemporary approach to materials. This hands-on workshop for teachers facilitates discussion on sustainability and the impact of the fast fashion industry on our environment.
Participants will leave with a foundational knowledge on the science behind natural dyeing and their bundled silk textile to open at a later date. Learning about the plants around us and their dye potential helps us connect to place and care for our environment on a deeper level. This workshop is designed to be easily replicable in a classroom context.
