The Cinema of Weimar Germany: Introduction to Film Series
Event description
This talk and discussion is an introduction to the film series of early German films sponsored by the GAHC+M that will be shown at the Last Picture House for five consecutive Wednesdays beginning September 4th.
Join us for an introduction session exploring the Weimar Era in Germany; the time period in Germany that followed Germany’s defeat in WWI and ends in 1933, with Hitler’s rise. It was an era of financial collapse, but also an explosion of creativity. Hitler would suppress some of these films and artworks as degenerative, but they have been a major inspiration and influence on Modernism.
We will discuss the significance of these films and the directors, actors, and set designers whose influence has never diminished.
The film series:
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
Nosferatu
The Blue Angel
