The Cloud Maker
Event description
An award-winning five-piece reimagine folkloric tales of goddesses
The Cloud Maker began in 2019, on the snowy peaks of Canada, where Te Kahureremoa Taumata, Sunny Kim and Aviva Endean met on a residency at The Banff Centre. In a cosy wooden hut, they connected over a story of the Māori moth goddess Raukatauri, the creation story of the Putorino, a cocoon-shaped flute, and just one of the many tāonga pūoro (singing treasures) which Taumata plays.
Soon The Cloud Maker’s line-up expanded to include Maria Moles on drums and Freya Schack-Arnott on cello and nyckelharpa, with visual designs from Kate Davis. Together the women celebrate goddesses from each of the musician’s cultures. Through sound and performance, they channel ancient tales of fierce battles, shaman dances, journeys to the afterlife, and of course their original inspiration—a moth goddess singing the most beautiful song of all time. This very special show at MPavilion will help launch the tour for their debut album.
