The arrest is lauded as a success for international law and justice for victims of extrajudicial killings in the Philippines. As this unfolds, Duterte supporters are holding demonstrations in the Philippines and elsewhere. This all comes at a time with the nearing Philippine midterm elections in May. What does this mean for Philippine democracy, the rule of law, and political accountability?
Join the ANU Philippines Institute in an online forum on the arrest of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and its implications on various fronts. Leading experts will examine the political fallout, legal processes, and regional consequences of this unprecedented development.
Our guest speakers will talk about the following topics:
Mr. Manuel Quezon III (political analyst and columnist for the Philippine Daily Inquirer) will discuss the political implications of this arrest in the nearing May midterm elections and for the Marcos Jr. administration as a whole.
Atty. Cecilia Jimenez-Damary (Senior Professional Lecturer, De La Salle University & former UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons) will discuss the rule of law and issues on the Hague’s jurisdiction on Duterte’s arrest.
