Event description

Come read, listen, and respond to The Dybbuk, or Between Two Worlds by S. Ansky in an open workshop rehearsal. Actors, dancers, musicians, writers, artists, designers, and all community members are welcome. In the morning, we will read the full script. In the evening, we will rehearse and share work. Come to one session, both sessions, or part of one session.

ABOUT THE SCRIPT:

The Dybbuk by S. Ansky is a gothic romance between two young lovers, a mythological tale about a broken promise, and a snapshot of traditional Jewish life in the Pale of Settlement as interpreted by writer and ethnographer Ansky. The story follows Khonnon, a poor yeshiva student who studies dark magic and Kabbalah, and Laia, the daughter of a wealthy man. Despite their mutual love for each other, Laia's father Sender arranges a marriage for Laia with a boy of his choosing. Grief-stricken, Khonnon transforms himself into a dybbuk, a malicious spirit, and possesses his would-be bride Laia.

PLEASE RSVP for each session you plan to attend:

10am-12:30pm - Morning session. A reading of the full script with discussion. Come to read or listen, your choice.

7pm-10pm - Evening session. We will workshop a section of the script. This may include scene work, movement, music, or visual exploration of the text. We will begin with introductions and work together on one or more aspects of the play. Join as an active participant or workshop observer. Freely move between the two as you like. Bring art supplies, musical instruments, etc., as you like.

9pm-10pm - Public work share. From 9pm-10pm, the workshop participants will share the results of our exploration. Anyone is welcome to come and see the work. This will be an informal work-share and, if time allows, an open conversation with all present. Please RSVP for this time if you are planning only to join us as an audience member.

If you are an artist joining the 7pm evening session, you do not need to RSVP for the 9pm work share separately.
