The Editors - Lecture 2: Anthony De Ceglie
Event description
The Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas presents The Editors. The most senior leaders in the news business will step away from their daily deadlines to reflect on the purpose and practice of journalism today.
Our next Editor is Anthony De Ceglie, the triple Walkley award-winning editor-in-chief of West Australian Newspapers, responsible for The West Australian, The Sunday Times, thewest.com.au, PerthNow and the company’s 18 regional and 11 local PerthNow newspapers.Â
Before editing The West, he was the deputy editor of The Daily Telegraph in Sydney. Under his watch, The West Australian has become the fastest-growing cross-platform news brand in the country. A rise of more than 20 per cent in its readers in the past year alone has come on the back of eye-catching viral front pages, award-winning investigations and a push to turbo-charge The West’s online video and audio.
About The Editors series
The series will provide a rare opportunity to hear from the editors of major newsrooms as they step back from the relentless news cycle to reflect on the bigger picture – the purpose of news, the practice of their craft, and the shifting role and influence of the Fourth Estate.
From crime, conflict and natural disasters to Australian politics and international events to the daily concerns of their readers, editors must determine what to publish, when and how. This means their knowledge, expertise and experience extend far beyond what appears in any one edition of their newspaper or online platform.
These newsroom leaders set the agenda. Now they are sharing their insights and providing an insider’s perspective on what forms and shapes it.
