The Escalation Curve: how to support when an individual on the spectrum is escalating

Professional Development In Focus Workshop

During this workshop the presenter will discuss the importance of identifying stressors, the observable signs of escalation at five different levels, and how support staff can respond when an individual is at these different levels. This workshop focuses on effective strategies to reduce the rate and severity of potential escalations by addressing anxiety, communication and sensory needs. It also looks at how we as support staff can help individuals to develop skills in identify emotions and the intensity of emotions to ultimately self regulate.

Topics include:

Identifying individuals stressors;
Identifying the impact of anxiety and stress on our ability to regulate;
What to do at each level when an individual’s escalating;
The importance of non-aversive de-escalation management approaches;
How to develop an individual’s ability to identify and manage emotions; and
Developing a 5-Point Plan for support staff.

Suitable for professionals supporting individuals of all ages.

All participants will receive a certificate with the workshop title, the number of hours and will state that the training links to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (where appropriate).

Professional Workshops are designed for any individuals who support an individual on the autism spectrum on a professional or volunteer basis. The workshops provide examples and strategies that are relevant for professionals.

Workshop Definitions:

GENERAL WORKSHOPS are designed to give participants an introductory understanding of the autism spectrum and provide key strategies to support individuals in a range of settings. This is achieved through facilitation of information, videos content, activities and discussion. It is recommended that participants attend an Autism SA General Workshops prior to attending an Autism SA In-Focus Workshop or Masterclass unless they have a good, current understanding of the autism spectrum.

IN FOCUS WORKSHOPS are designed for participants that have a good, current understanding of autism that what a more in-depth knowledge and understanding relating to a particular area of the autism field and greater confidence in applying strategies to support individuals in this area. This is achieved through facilitation of information, video content, activities and discussion.

MASTERCLASSES are short intensive workshops that are designed to provide participants that already have a good, current understanding of autism with specific content relating to a particular topic, strategy or program. This is achieved through facilitation of information, video content, activities and discussion.
