South West/Great Southern/Peel Edition - The Future of Homelessness Practice Workshop (ONLINE)
Description
Building on the conversations and insights generated through Shelter WA's Homelessness Week 2026 workshop series, Shelter WA is bringing together homelessness sector leaders, frontline workers, peer workers, People with Lived Experience, and others working across housing and homelessness services across the South West, Great Southern and Peel regions to explore the future of homelessness practice in Western Australia.
The homelessness sector is facing growing demand, more complex challenges, and increasing pressure on workers and services. We want to hear from the people who see these realities every day and those who have experienced the system first hand.
This workshop will provide a space to share ideas and insights about what is working, what needs to change, and what support people need to deliver and access better homelessness services in regional and remote communities.
Together, we will:
Explore the changing needs, challenges and pressures facing the homelessness sector.
Discuss what workers, peer staff, leaders and People with Lived Experience need to feel supported, valued and effective in their roles.
Examine workforce wellbeing, organisational resilience and the conditions needed to build a sustainable and future-ready sector.
Consider how Lived experience and peer expertise can strengthen service delivery, governance, policy and system design.
Share ideas for improving collaboration, advocacy, service integration, commissioning, policy reform and sector development.
Identify practical opportunities to improve outcomes for people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity across regional, rural and remote communities across Western Australia.
By bringing together different perspectives, this workshop will help identify practical ideas and priorities for building a stronger, more responsive homelessness sector that meets the needs of people experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness.

This inclusive, cross-sector conversation will help ensure regional voices are represented in discussions about the future of homelessness practice in Western Australia.
Facilitator
Dr Amity James
Amity is an Associate Professor in the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance, Curtin University. She has developed a national reputation for excellence in housing research, in particular at the intersection of housing and ageing and housing policy. Amity has led numerous funded research projects from sources such as the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute, Australian Research Council and WA government, including the Investigative Panel into building and retaining an effective homelessness sector workforce, AHURI Final Report No. 409, funded and published by AHURI in 2023. Amity possesses extensive experience in qualitative research methods as well as a deep understanding of housing policy. An applied researcher, Amity uses innovative qualitative methodologies to address policy-focussed research questions and works closely with industry and government to deliver timely and relevant information to inform policy. She brings to the project a wealth of experience in designing, conducting and analysing qualitative data collections as well as refined policy analysis and evaluation skills. An experienced research manager, she has demonstrated her ability to produce high level housing research, that is both policy and industry relevant, in a timely manner.
