The future of speculative futures in Aotearoa NZ, Australia and the Pacific

TUESDAY 27 Feb at 12pm 2024 [AEDT] / 2pm [NZT]

In this free-flowing conversation, to kick off 2024, we have invited Sarah MacArthur, (Naarm Melbourne) and Victoria Mulligan (Aotearoa New Zealand) to plot out a short history of Speculative Futures and then pose some possible initiatives that could emerge in the near future.

Sarah has experience in local government and Collective Imagination practices.

Victoria focuses on the use of strategic foresight and participatory futures tools to create more innovative and purposeful cultures across public and private sector.

Sarah and Victoria are each involved in local organisations that seek to explore the potential of speculative futures: how do we understand the first principles; what value does speculative practice bring to considering change inthe urban environment and ways of working in the 21st century; what examples can we examine to consider both the practical and theoretical foundations for the next stages of speculative futures; and what do these perspectives tell us about imagining ways through the polycrisis we are confronting.

We are particularly interested in the Pacific region as the location for this, given the rich array ofactivities taking place now and in the past that shine light on alternative ways of envisioningpotential, humane and imaginative futures. Please join us for this#work_out_loudsession to continue building the Pacific design community. The format is a Zoom seminar with Sarah, Victoria and (Kylie/Anne) to open the conversation, followed by an extended conversationwith participants. The session is recorded for internal useonly
