Event description

Seeing is believe: The Future School is here

What is required to create schools that will respond to emerging challenges in our transforming world? Join Valerie Hannon, Professor Martin Westwell and Peter Mader to learn more about this and the concept of the ‘Future School’ in an inspiring one-hour online program. Seeing is believing: The Future School is here is delivered in partnership with the Australian Learning Lecture, the SACE Board and the South Australian Secondary Principals' Association.

A learning opportunity for education system leaders and school educators

As we consider how we might transform our schools of the future, Australian Learning Lecture (ALL) research led by Valerie Hannon found that radically transformed schools are already here - all around the world. In this ALL online session, hear about these future-focused schools that have widely divergent settings and purposes – but also how they share a core set of common design principles. These principles will provide useful guidance to designing future fit schools across Australia.

ALL Lecture and Q & A

Lecture: A 25 minute pre-recorded online lecture by Valerie Hannon, with video vignettes of international innovative schools to demonstrate that 'seeing is believing' how schools can be designed for the future.

Q&A: The lecture will be followed by a livestream Q&A facilitated by Professor Martin Westwell. Valerie will join from the UK.

ALL paper: An edited version of the lecture transcript covering the design principles and the two examples of future focused schools will be provided to participants after the lecture.

A recording of the lecture will be available to all registered participants.

Our presenters

Valerie Hannon

Valerie Hannon

Valerie Hannon is a global thought leader, inspiring education systems to re-think what 'success' will mean in the 21st century, and the implications for education. She is co-founder of the UK-based Innovation Unit and has worked on education change in the UK, Europe, USA, Australia and Africa. Valerie is a founding member and Co-Chair of the Global Education Leaders Partnership; expert adviser on education to the OECD and a frequent contributor to the World Summit on Innovation in Education (WISE). Professor Martin Westwell

Professor Martin Westwell
Martin is the Chief Executive of the SACE Board and has worked extensively with education systems and other organisations in using evidence to inform policy, practice, innovation and impact in education. He is leading the SACE Board in an aspirational new vision of educational change and student transformation which brings the whole student into focus. The SACE Board's Strategic Framework 2020-2023 decisively reframes the education narrative so that the ability to prosper and flourish now and in the future is the intentional outcome of a SACE education ... so that students thrive.

Peter Mader

Peter is the inaugural Chief Executive of the South Australian Secondary Principals' Association after leading the organisation for six years as the SASPA President. Prior to his time with SASPA, Peter served as principal in three large public secondary schools. Peter also co-designed and co-delivered the professional development strategy for South Australia's implementation of the “new” SACE and once led the state’s School-based Research and Reform Project (a collaboration between the AEU, the Education Department & University of SA for school initiated evidence-based improvement).
