The Future We Want: Humanitarian Changemakers
Event description
Join the UNAA Young Professionals Queensland for our third event in the ‘The Future We Want’ series: Humanitarian Changemakers’. On Wednesday August 19th, we are hosting a collaborative ‘World Cafe’ style online event to bring you knowledge and understanding of what it means to work in the humanitarian sector. The focus of the event will be linking you with current leaders in humanitarian organisations across health, climate change, refugee support and community/sustainable development.
The Future We Want: Humanitarian Changemakers aims to link you with community leaders, engage you in their work and foster a greater understanding of what we can all be doing right now to make our community a better place. We will delve into new approaches to socio-cultural and environmental governance and justice, climate action, and community development. We’re having this discussion because young people will be the most affected by this current period of uncertainty and anxiety. Most importantly though, young people are the future leaders we need to be changemakers in their communities, and across the world.
Our lineup of fantastic speakers include:
- Ashleigh Streeter (Host): Vice-Curator of Canberra Global Shapers, Policy Officer at the Department of Prime Minister & Cabinet and Award winning Gender justice activist. Ashleigh dedicates her professional and volunteer time to gender justice and equity through international policy and community engagement.
-
Erika Isabel-Yague: Rotary Peace Fellow currently completely a Masters in Peace & Conflict
Studies at The University of Queensland (UQ). Erika is also a consultant for UNICEF on gender empowerment and
young people’s participation in humanitarian and peacebuilding.

Development, Sustainability Science, Policy, and Practice.

Saad has delivered over 350 public talks, including a TEDx Canberra session that shares his story of fleeing Syria and finding a new home with courage, poignancy and humour.
- Luke Barbagallo: A community development and social enterprise professional, Luke works as Partnerships & Programs Manager at Pollinate Group, a social enterprise and last-mile distributor that empowers women entrepreneurs across India and Nepal.
