Event description

A Wee Gathering for Writers: 17 February 2022: 4 pm - 8 pm.

JOIN IN @HOME OR LIVE, IN PERSON IN DUNEDIN

It's easy - just find a comfy seat and open the zoom link or join us at the Otago Pioneer Women's Hall.

If you have always wanted to write and publish "something" but didn't know where to start, welcome to our Great Write Inn, writer's community.

We're a group of writers and tutors who enjoy learning from each other.

We meet in person and on-line to think and talk about writing.

We write, and support each other in the spirit of collaboration.

The First Cohort: 10/21 is ready to present their stories.

So we are having a Wee Gathering to support them on their journey into authorship.

So it would be great to have an enthusiastic audience @Home because large events at venues are not possible right now.

We have three sessions with a short networking break between each.

Session One: Be inspired by our writers reading their work (free)

Session Two: The Great Write Inn showcase and online class room opens (free)

  • What is the Great Write Inn and who is it for?
  • eMeet our Tutoring Team and find out what classes are open for 2022.
  • Special deals for the Wee Write Aways: Writers Retreats in Hot Tub Valley

Session Three: Book Cover Avec Vino and Tea ($3 Entry)

Book separately or come for all three sessions.

Click the Purple "GET TICKETS'' BUTTON to secure 1 of 100 Zoom Links.

SESSION ONE: 4 - 5 pm: HEAR FROM OUR WRITER'S COMMUNITY

In October 2021, a group of writers met in Dunedin to enjoy a series of Masterclasses for the Inaugural Great Write Inn.

Inspired by the Mystery Game Cluedo and a morning at Dunedin's beloved Olveston Historic Home, we guided our writers through the process of creating a Character, choosing a Room and involving an Object.

This session is your opportunity to hear from our first cohort of writers who completed and submitted a short story.

We will then have 30 minutes of networking and refreshments, to allow everyone (both in-room and On-line) to stretch and get something to eat and drink.

SESSION TWO 5.30 - 6 pm: GREAT WRITE INN SHOWCASE: SEVEN STEPS FROM AN IDEA TO A PUBLISHED SHORT STORY

Join us for the official opening of the Great Write Inn On-line classroom.

What is the Great Write Inn?

The Great Write Inn is an Experience designed by writers for writers.

We have hand-picked some of New Zealand's expert facilitators, writing tutors, authors, publishers and book sellers.

We have developed a
Seven Step programme to help you take an idea all the way through to a published story.

In this session, Great Write Inn Festival Director Julia Anne will showcase highlights from the 12 Masterclasses which guide writers through the Seven Step Programme.

The Masterclasses are conveniently grouped into two courses:

(1) The Great Write Inn (Steps 1 - 4)

Ideal for people who want some support to get started writing and enjoy the satisfaction of writing a Short Story. The Tutoring Team is Amy Scott, Fiona Farrell, Catherine Chidgey, Diane Brown and Julia Anne.

(2) PublishMe (Steps 5 - 7)

Ideal for writers who already have a body of work, but are interested in editing, formatting, self-publishing, marketing and software.

This tutoring Team is made up of editors, publishers, marketing experts and booksellers.

They provide the latest on the publishing and self-publishing industry.

They teach you how reach your audiences and make money from your storytelling. Taught by Emma Neale, Fiona Cole, Steve Rogan, Brownyn Wylie Gibb, San Eng and Julia Anne.

Enrolments will open for a new cohort of writers, starting 17 February 2022 with free passes given to all Tutors and Writers who attended any of our Live Events in October 2021.

We will then have another 30 minutes of networking and refreshments.

Enrolments will be open for new entrants who want to be the writer they've always wanted to be.

SESSION THREE 6.30 - 8 pm:  BOOK COVER AVEC VINO AND TEA

Have you written a story and want some help to visually communicate the key themes to connect with your ideal readers?

Or did you already complete The Great Write Inn Short Story Challenge and now you want to create a cover for your story?

We have two expert Tutors to break this it down into a fun and easy step-by-step process.

Enjoy wine, tea and nibbly things and then release your creativity!

This is great fun, especially for individual writers at home.

The Theory: Julie Lawrence will take you through the key principles for effective Book Cover Design. Julie Lawrence has a B.A. (Hons) in Graphic Communications (and was the Graduate of the Year in 2000).

Julie has taught Design and Professional Studies at the School of The Arts, University of Northampton, with a special focus on book covers.

Julie's sense of fun, along with key knowledge of both business and design, makes for an entertaining, informative and memorable session.

The Practice: Then it's time to get out the crayons, pencils, felts and collage with Creativity Queenie Eleanor Girven. Eleanor has over 20 years of experience and loves teaching art.

Eleanor believes we all have the potential to create whenever we gift our self the time and space to play.

This fun, interactive session is about allowing the creative process to unfold. Eleanor shows us how to let go of our writer's ego to get in touch with our unique creative force.

There is a small charge ($3) for this session, which we use to support our creatives, tutors and entrepreneurs.
