Sunday Forums #1: The housing crisis: what could Port Phillip do?

Sunday 14 July. 2-30-4.30pm. Uniting Church, 325 Dorcas Street, South Melbourne.

For the first time in its history, Port Phillip Council has not allocated any forward funding for social housing. This must change.

The housing crisis is profound.

Local government can be a dynamic engine for change. Let’s look at initiatives underway locally, across Victoria and beyond.

Facilitated by the brilliant Peter Mares, author of No Place Like Home: Repairing Australia's Housing Crisis.

Invited guests include

  • Mike Collins (Merri-bek Council) presenting an overview of what’s happening in Local Govt across Victoria;
  • George Hatvani (Launch Housing) speaking about Port Phillip Zero, which is focused on homelessness;
  • Representatives of the three local social housing agencies;

as well as a report on what’s happened since the housing forum last year.

_____

A stronger, fairer community for all.

The year has flown and we are already midway through 2024.

With a Port Phillip Council election in October, it will be a big year for our community.

Will we elect a responsive, competent and caring council or one that can barely get the garbage collected?

Will we vote to rebuild the community services that we all need or to cut rates for the wealthiest property owners?

Will we take genuine local action on climate change and the threat of rising sea levels to our properties and businesses or kick the problem down the road?

_____

We need to talk about the great challenges that our community faces. Rebuilding community services, the future of our shopping strips, climate change, community safety and much more.

From mid-July through to September, Progressive Port Phillip will be hosting fortnightly Sunday forums at the beautiful St Kilda SouthPort Uniting Church, 325 Dorcas Street, South Melbourne.

The church is a warm, welcoming space close to the Nos. 96, 12 and 1 trams and with plenty of car parking. We are so grateful for the kind co-operation of St Kilda South Port Uniting Church.
