The impact of air pollution on human health
Event description
PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL EDUCATION WEBINAR
Air pollution is estimated by the WHO to be responsible for an estimated seven million excess deaths per year and is a major cause of ill-health in Australia.
Air pollution comes from transport and industry emissions, from the combustion of coal and gas and from bushfires. Last summers catastrophic fires demonstrated how serious a health threat air pollution from smoke is. This threat will increase in Australia as a result of global warming.
For this webinar, Associate Professor Vicki Kotsirilos will present scientific evidence which describes how exposure to air pollutants, even below accepted Government standards, can seriously harm human health and is a cause of a number of chronic health conditions that commonly present to medical practitioners and cause suffering in the community.
Air pollutants increase morbidity and mortality in multiple ways, with the elderly and children being at particular risk and susceptible to harm when exposed. Dr Vicki will discuss the health risks associated with common air pollutants and demonstrate how far reaching these effect are.
