Groundbreaking research reveals funding hotspots for women in pandemic recovery

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and applying a gender lens to accelerate Australia's recovery

Equity Economics and Australians Investing In Women

Groundbreaking research from Equity Economics, commissioned by Australians Investing in Women, for the first time sets out where funding by philanthropists and corporate donors can have the most impact on women facing continuing employment, family and social hardship from the effects of COVID-19. This new analysis highlights where investment in women will do the most good now and in the future, and the real risk that Australia’s gender gap will widen without urgent action.

Join us for the launch of this important report for the philanthropic sector as award-winning journalist and author, Catherine Fox, deep dives into the research findings with leading economists and the report authors, Angela Jackson and Leonora Risse.

Angela was Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff to the Australian Minister for Finance and Deregulation from November 2007 to September 2010.

Dr Leonora Risse is an economist with interest and expertise in labour economics, gender equality, economic psychology, demographic and population economics, education, disadvantage and wellbeing.

Her current research focuses on understanding gender differences in economic opportunities and outcomes. This includes understanding the gender pay gap, women’s participation in the workforce, women’s under-representation in leadership, and the role of attitudes, personality traits and societal norms.

Leonora earned her PhD in Economics from the University of Queensland, and gained public policy experience working as a Senior Research Economist for the Australian Government Productivity Commission.

Leonora is a Research Fellow with the Women’s Leadership Institute Australia (WLIA) and recently spent time in residence at Harvard University as a Research Fellow with the Women and Public Policy Program (WAPPP) at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She formerly held a Vice-Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship at RMIT University (Melbourne, Australia) and is now appointed as a Lecturer in Economics at RMIT University.

Leonora has been actively involved in establishing the Women in Economics Network (WEN) in Australia, and engages regularly with public audiences on gender equality issues.

During a long career with the Financial Review, she edited several sections of the newspaper, and wrote the Corporate Woman column; and she has published five books, including “Stop Fixing Women” which along with her journalism was awarded the 2017 Walkley Award for Women’s Leadership in Media.

Her most recent book “Women Kind” (with co-author Kirstin Ferguson) was launched in 2018 and examines how female solidarity and support is rebooting the global women’s movement.

Catherine helped establish the annual Financial Review 100 Women of Influence Awards in 2012 and was named a Woman of Influence in 2018; she was a member of the Australian Defence Force Gender Equality Advisory Board, sits on the Australians Investing In Women board, and is co-founder of the Sydney Women’s Giving Circle.
