Event description

Come and join us for the first ever Uniting Church WA IPDC Quiz night. Represent your church and bring the amazing Uniting Church Quiz Trophy back to your church to proudly display for the upcoming year.

Meet others from the Uniting Church in a fun filled night suitable for all the family.

Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7.00pm SHARP START.

The quiz night will be raising funds for the Black Pearl Network (BPN) which is overseen by a charitable organisation, the Creative Living Centre, and is a project of local WA Uniting Churches under the supervision of the Uniting Church Synod of WA.

The BPN has worked alongside our indigenous Papuan partners in the Papuan provinces of Indonesia since 2008.

The Papuan provinces of Indonesia experience disproportionate poverty compared to other regions of Indonesia; this is especially true for those of indigenous Papuan heritage. According to the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade the Papuan provinces and other Eastern Indonesian provinces have the highest poverty incidences in Indonesia (https://www.dfat.gov.au/sites/... two main projects delivered by BPN’s Papuan partners are low-cost English language tuition and provision of clean water.

English language tuition helps to alleviate poverty by:

1. Giving students greater opportunity for employment in government or tourism.

2. Enabling students to further their education by obtaining scholarships to study overseas enriching the professional knowledge and training in Papua on their return.

3. Assisting those living in Papua to communicate effectively with the rest of the world.

Clean Water- The BPN is working alongside Papuan Universities to deliver a simple but effective rainwater collection system known as the ‘first flush’ system. More information can be found at www.blackpearlnetwork.org.au

    1. Access to clean drinking water is a basic human right, and something that we here in Australia often take for granted.
    2. Water-related diseases of diarrhoea and typhoid are two of the four leading causes of under-five mortality in Indonesia and are in high prevalence in the Papuan provinces where access to clean drinking water is limited.
