The Koalas documentary - A free screening at Victorian Parliament House

The film explores how and why this iconic species is predicted to be extinct in the wild by 2050. While koalas are listed as endangered in three states, in Victoria, due to a history of translocation and the blue gum plantation industry, koalas seem to be thriving. This has led to "management strategies" by the relevant government departments (a euphemism for culling, hormone implants and worse). The recent incident in Budj Bim National Park has drawn public attention to this issue.

This screening comes just hours before Animal Justice Party MP Georgie Purcell takes the floor to debate the aerial shooting of koalas in Budj Bim National Park, and the broader issue of koala “management” across Victoria, after advocates helped reach the signature threshold on the Koala Alliance Parliamentary petition calling for an independent inquiry. This means the government will now be compelled to respond, allowing us to demand real answers and ensure this never occurs again.
Attendees are welcome to attend the Legislative Council public gallery to view the debate from 5:15–5:45 pm. On arrival at Parliament House, please check in with reception staff at the main entrance on Spring Street – they will greet you and guide you through security screening (bring ID!). Please allow 20 minutes for entry before the start time.
