The Living Room Theatre in partnership with Kawai presents: The Köln Concert – A Tribute by Matt McMahon

Join us for a special celebration of one of jazz’s most iconic works—Keith Jarrett’s The Köln Concert—on its 50th anniversary. In this one-of-a-kind performance, celebrated Sydney-based pianist and composer Matt McMahon brings his own voice and improvisational flair to the 1975 masterpiece, offering a fresh interpretation as part of The Living Room Theatre’s 25th anniversary celebrations.

Released in 1975, The Köln Concert remains the best-selling solo jazz album and piano album of all time. Recorded live at the Opera House in Köln, West Germany, this legendary performance by Keith Jarrett is known for its profound spontaneity, remarkable energy, and emotive resonance. McMahon, a standout figure in Australia’s jazz scene, takes this monumental piece into a new direction, paying homage while imbuing it with his own unique sensibilities.

A virtuoso pianist and highly accomplished composer, Matt McMahon has been a cornerstone of Australia’s jazz community since 1993. He has played with some of the country’s most esteemed musicians and has contributed to over ninety albums. McMahon’s accolades include winning the National Jazz Award (1999), the Freedman Jazz Fellowship (2005), and receiving critical acclaim for his albums such as Paths and Streams (2006) and Ellipsis (2007).

This performance is a rare opportunity to experience a modern master channeling the spirit of Jarrett while celebrating both his artistry and the legacy of The Köln Concert. Don’t miss this extraordinary evening of jazz innovation and reverence.
