The Little Big Bang - Brisbane

AFRICA MEETS BRAZIL

HAPPY JANE CAFE

Saturday April 5th

6 pm

Epic night of full powered live and electronic infused dance music, bringing together the two epic rhythmic cultures of AFRICA & BRAZIL

Featuring:

LAMINE SONKO performing with SPANKINHIDE

Senegalese musical and cultural ambassador Lamine Sonko headlines the Little Big Bang.  An interdisciplinary artist, Lamine’s work draws on traditional African embodied knowledge to create multi-artform experiences inspired by his cultural background as a guewel (cultural role) of the Sing Sing clan and Korings of Kaabu, and a member of the Serer, Wolof and Mandinko cultural communities of Senegal. With his distinctive traditional vocal style, alongside kora, sabar percussion and guitar he defines new ways to re-imagine the traditional African, contemporary synthesis in music.

At the Little Big Bang Lamine will join Spankinhide on both percussion and - very excitingly - on electric guitar, bringing a dynamic edge to the already rich African rhythms.

SPANKINHIDE

Led by highly respected djembe player, teacher and maker, Elliott Orr, Spankinhide has become a much sought-after African rhythm collective, with active members in South East Qld and Northern NSW. Drawing their repertoire from both traditional and contemporary sources, Spankinhide brings a dynamic but decidedly danceable set of rhythms and songs that transform their audience from spectators into a heaving, primal, spontaneous dance floor of wildness!

Having played headline shows at the Woodford Folk and Island Vibe festivals, Spankinhide continues their legacy of delivering world class performances. The members of Spankinhide are successful musicians in their own right, including the likes of Tsoof Baras, Adama Doumbouya Fakoly, Oliver Jackson, Marina Uehara, Alister Murray and Charles Wall (aka Bobby Alu).

This Little Big Bang not only sees Spankinhide joined by Lamine Sonko on electric guitar but a horn section including Diego Trigo and Roberto Roschel.

The very existence of Spankinhide is to fuel the fire of dance. Rich rhythms, driving doundoun melodies, crack and boom to fill the room! If you find you're not dancing, it might be wise to check your pulse - you may be dead!!!

Dj Pivete Loro

Bringing the electro vibes with an awesome spread of tunes spanning Africa to Pivete's own home-nation, Brazil. Killing it on dance floors from Bris, Goldie, Byron and down to Melbs, this Brazileiro is ready to set the dance floor on fire.

With some added live percussion from Elliott, Lucas and other professionals in the room prepare for a dance frenzy!

ZORMIWASA (meaning "come play music")

EPIC!! No other word quite covers this incredible performance. Under the tutelage of Elliott Orr, some 30 beautiful humans have been learning Mafue, a contemporary Chris Berry water rhythm, complete with extensive solo phrases and a song! From complete beginners to Elliott's most dedicated students, some of whom have been studying with him and belonging to this community for 5, 10, 15, even 20 years, Zormiwasa willl blow your mind and hearts right open!

Samba Vibes

Led by the local legend Lucas Saad Tambelli, Samba Vibes is a proper big mob of some 20-30 champions playing authentic Brazilian rhythms. No mess, no fuss, just solid Brazilian grooves to get your hips and feet moving.

Mona Verdour Rock Choir

Mona and Derek join us at the Little Big Bang, bringing with them a large choir and demonstrating the joy of coming together in song.

Lamine Sonko, Spankinhide, Zormiwasa, Samba Vibes and the Mona Verdour Rock Choir are joining forces, coming together to perform Samba Sabar, a composition by Elliott, Lamine, Lucas and Marina. This epic collaboration will involve well over 50 people, bringing heart and soul, to the stage for your wonderment. Lift your jaw from the floor, feel the heat of the beat and join us in celebrating the incredible music and culture of Africa and Brazil.

This is the very essence of community! Many beautiful souls bringing their love of rhythm and dance into a collective moment of connection and expression.

Come early to witness this true magic!
