The Living Tradition: An Evening with Mohamed Camara

Special Guest Workshop with Mohamed Camara (Guinea)

We are honoured to welcome Mohamed Camara, master Malinké drummer and griot from Guinea, for a rare workshop with the Dandenong Ranges drumming community.

In the Malinké tradition, rhythm is far more than music—it is a living language that brings people together, marks important moments in community life, and carries stories across generations. As a griot, Mohamed is part of an unbroken lineage of musicians and storytellers entrusted with preserving this cultural heritage.

Throughout the workshop, participants will learn traditional rhythms as they are taught in Guinea, exploring not only the patterns themselves but the musical communication, cultural meaning and ensemble spirit that make this tradition so powerful.

Everyone is welcome. Whether you are new to drumming or have years of experience, this is a rare opportunity to learn directly from a master musician and immerse yourself in the vibrant traditions of West Africa.
