The Making of Misbehaving Machines: An AI in the Library project

AI machines misbehave. They make errors, they hallucinate. But they do so while pretending to be absolutely certain about their answers.

What would happen if we designed an AI machine that didn’t pretend to be so certain... that would openly misbehave?

This year, a group of UTS researchers and librarians from four Greater Sydney libraries made a “Misbehaving AI answer machine”.

AI in the Library is a pilot project sponsored by the University of Technology Sydney. It is a partnership between the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), the State Library of New South Wales (SLNSW) and the New South Wales Public Libraries Association (NSWPLA), UTS Data and AI Ethics Cluster and the Critical Digital Visualisations Design Research Group. We aim to develop an innovative AI literacy programme to support librarians and library clients in Australia to understand the trustworthiness of AI answer services such as ChatGPT. Libraries participating in the pilot project include City of Parramatta, City of Sydney, NSW TAFE and UTS libraries.
