The Need For, Potential Of & Making Real Sustainability in Australian Sport
Event description
Sport has been circling for a number of years in truly committing to playing its role in addressing the climate crisis. Not only is there a necessary duty for clubs, codes and competitions to decarbonise rapidly to avert the worst impacts of climate change, it holds a compelling place within the cultural psyche of Australians - that is, the general Australians love of and interest in sport and its athletes.
Meaningful action on climate change has been hindered for decades by a shifting political, cultural and social debate - we must act and we can't act now. As effective actions become increasingly accessible and affordable for the general population and business community, sport could become a leading platform by which to encourage and support a faster transition to a net zero future.
Finding Nature will bring together leading figures from Australia's sports and sustainability communities to share their own insights and discussion in confidence three burning questions:
- What must Australian sport do to deliver on a net zero future?
- How could we not - snapshot of the science and how it imperils sport in Australia now and into the future through more frequent and intense acute and chronic disasters
- Understanding the trajectory of necessary emissions reductions and how that relates to operational savings and the benefits of energy independence
- Who is doing what and how to deliver the needed zero carbon future?
- Lessons learned from those in sport and asset contexts in Australia and overseas that sport can readily adopt
- Balancing urgent action with avoiding issues of integrity and quality
- Why sport offers a unique influencing position in the hearts and minds of Australians to drive the inevitable transition to a zero carbon future
- A belief in the fundamental love of sport and athletes in Australia by Australians and how to galvanise a movement of change
- Agree on the leadership potential of players, clubs, codes and competitions to transform Australia for the better
On the night, you'll work with sustainability leaders to develop your own action plans that address three key goals: How to pitch sustainability to your leadership, how to speak publicly about your sustainability goals and actions, and how to green your operations and assets for both emissions reductions and costs savings.Â
