The Neurodiversity Paradigm: A Deep Dive

Join author, speaker and advocate Sonny Jane for an online talk for those committed to deepening their understanding of the neurodiversity paradigm and how it intersects with radical movements like Mad Pride, Psychiatric Abolition and the Hearing Voices Movement.

Despite the increasing use of neurodiversity affirming practice or neurodiversity affirming language, there is still a significant lack of understanding of the core concepts underpinning the neurodiversity paradigm as well as people continuing to reinforce the pathology paradigm despite its lack of compatibility with neurodiversity. 

We’ll take a closer look at the pathology paradigm and how what we often label as a disorder or mental illness is actually a cultural judgement rather than a biological one and we’ll dive into how the neurodiversity paradigm offers a very different approach when it comes to human differences and distress. 

We’ll cover:

• The history of the DSM and the roots of the pathology paradigm

• What neuronormativity is and how it shows up

• The neurodiversity paradigm and why it matters

• Myths and misinformation surrounding the neurodiversity paradigm 

• Intersections with movements like Mad Pride, Psychiatric Abolition and the Hearing Voices Movement

• How this paradigm can be applied to differences and experiences like plurality, altered states, hearing voices, eating disorders and personality disorders

This workshop is for anyone wanting to better understand the neurodiversity paradigm. Whether you’re a therapist, psychologist, allied health professional, community worker or just curious, it will leave you with a stronger foundation and a whole lot to think about.
