The Odyssey
Event description
Hagley Theatre School’s graduating ensemble presents The Odyssey, the inaugural graduation project of the relaunched One-Year Acting Training Course.
At its heart lies Homer’s timeless tale of Odysseus’s ten-year journey home from the Trojan War, confronting gods, monsters, storms, and temptations. This playful and eclectic adaptation breathes new life into the classic, blending circus, storytelling, comedy, chorus, and music to explore what it means to find our way home.
HTS’s Odyssey is not just the story of one man’s voyage, but a reflection of a generation’s search for courage, folly, resilience, and belonging. The production showcases the breadth of the students’ training — from acting and movement to clown, bouffon, Te Ao Haka, singing, tragic chorus, melodrama, and circus — fusing diverse performance forms into one ambitious, ensemble-led celebration of theatre-making.
Directed by HTS Artistic Dr Director Pedro Ilgenfritz in collaboration with acrobatics tutor Danny Syme, The Odyssey is the culmination of the students’ year-long exploration of acting technique, theatre creation, and storytelling.
