The Power of Community Independents


Event description

The 2022 federal election saw the largest increase in community independents in Australian history. At this one-off special event hear from the people with unique insight into the success of the community independent movement and what it might mean here in Page. 

At this event you will:

  • hear inside stories from community campaigners, 
  • learn about the key ingredients of successful community-led independent movements, and
  • have the chance to ask your questions about this unique community-driven moment.

This will be an inspiring afternoon, with opportunities to meet like-minded people who are passionate about people-powered politics.

It'll also be an amazing opportunity to get involved with Independent Page and help us create a better future for our community!

Guest Speakers: Phil Haines, Hanabeth Luke, Denis Ginnivan 

 

Guest Bios:

Phil is a founding and continuing member of the community group known as 'Voices for Indi'. He was campaign director for the past four successful federal election campaigns in Indi for the community independents, Cathy McGowan (2013 and 2016) and Helen Haines (2019 and 2022). Phil was the driving force and multiple chapter author of the recent book, 'The Indi Way'.  He is a recognised leader and proud champion of what has become a major political and social movement in Australia.

Phil had a successful career in agriculture R&D, strategy, investment, and policy, working in partnership with industry and farmers. He runs a small beef farm with Helen in northeast Victoria.

Hanabeth Luke

Dr. Hanabeth Luke ran for Federal parliament as Community Independent for Page in 2022. She is passionate about building resilience in rural and regional Australia. As a researcher, she explores drivers of decision-making for strategic planning that integrates optimal information and approaches for supporting farms, land and community. She was the Founding Coordinator of the SCU Courses in Regenerative Agriculture, and is Project Leader of two national research projects on farmer decision-making and developing indicators for regenerative agriculture. Her work aims to reduce community and landscape vulnerability to weather extremes, increasing wellbeing and regenerative capacity through building and sharing knowledge among farmers, scientists and regional organisations. She holds several voluntary roles including Founding Convenor of the Evans area Resilience Network, and on the Marine Rescue boat.

Denis Ginnivan:

Denis is a 2012 founding member and past president of Voices for Indi - the group which supported the emergence of Cathy McGowan and Helen Haines, who successfully stood for election in Indi as federal MPs. He has had key roles in developing events, logistics, and strategy in four successive (and successful) campaigns.

Denis has been an advocate for rural policy and service responses for people with disability, rural / farm communities in distress, and the need for quality neuro-trauma rehabilitation services in rural and regional Australia. And for building the community voices movement!
Denis lives on a small farm near Yackandandah, a town he is proud to call home!
