About the event:

CRU is delighted to host the Queensland online premier of The Ride Ahead – a documentary that underscores the value of inclusion and encourages young adults with disabilities navigating transition to adulthood.

The Ride Ahead, from father-son co-directors Samuel & Dan Habib (USA), is the feature-length version of the Emmy® Award-winning New York Times Op-Doc, My Disability Roadmap.

Samuel and Dan were plenary speakers at our recent two-day event - Building Capacity for Lifelong Inclusion. We are excited to have another opportunity to work with them - bringing you their latest documentary.

Samuel Habib is a typical 21-year-old, itching to move out, start a career, and find love. But no one tells you how to be an adult, let alone an adult with a disability. Can a community of disability activists help him follow his dreams?

Samuel seeks out wisdom through conversations with disabled mentors including comedian Maysoon Zayid, Americans with Disabilities Act legends Judy Heumann and Bob Williams; Tony Award winner Ali Stroker; hip-hop artist Keith Jones; autistic, queer activist Lydia X.Z. Brown; and marathon runner and disability activist Andrew Peterson.

The Ride Ahead will be shown with Open Captions and audio descriptions.

This online screening will feature a live welcome by CRU, a recorded introduction by Samuel Habib and will conclude with a recorded Q&A session between Samuel and his father, Dan Habib.

This is a live-only online event, a recording will not be available. However, the film only (no introduction or Q&A) will be available ‘on-demand’ between 18 July 2025 to 1 August 2025.

About the Directors:

Samuel Habib is a college student and the Emmy® Award-winning co-director of My Disability Roadmap and The Ride Ahead. Samuel uses a communication device (as well as his voice and gestures) to express himself. In addition to exploring his current and future academic and career options, Samuel also navigates significant, chronic health challenges. He works part-time as a multimedia production assistant and presenter at the Westchester Institute for Human Development.

Dan Habib created the Emmy® Award winning New York Times Op-Doc, My Disability Roadmap and the new feature film, The Ride Ahead with his son Samuel.

Dan is also the creator of award-winning documentary film, Including Samuel and many other short films on disability related topics. Dan is the Inclusive Communities Project Director at the Westchester Institute for Human Development.

Who Should Attend?

This film holds lessons for us ALL! Whether you are watching because you are a teenager or an adult with disability, a family member, friend, teacher or supporter we think Samuel’s film will give you food for thought as you draw your own roadmap for a life included in your community.

What do I need to participate?

This workshop will be held via a Zoom Session and log-in details will be sent to participants who register a few days prior to the event. Log-in will be available 15 minutes prior to the event commencing.

To participate you will need:

a computer, tablet or smart phone with internet access
speakers/sound
a microphone and video camera are not essential but will be helpful for your participation

Learning Objectives

As a result of this screening you will:

Gain insights into current assumptions and knowledge about disability, inclusion and ableism.
Identify common barriers and opportunities in seeking an included adult life.
Recognise the many benefits of self-determination, education, meaningful employment and a life connected with community.
Understand how experiences during the school years impact and inform transition to adulthood.
Describe ways in which family, friends and community members can provide support that leads to an inclusive life.
Understand the importance of mentorship for people with disability and how it can increase opportunities.
Reflect on the power of advocacy and ways to advocate, build awareness and create positive change.
Learn more about perspectives on disability, inclusion and advocacy that exist outside of Australia.
