The Seven Ups @ Mamma Chen’s – Saturday July 12
Event description
Heavy groove combo The Seven Ups return west for a one-off night at Mamma Chen’s. After packing out the venue in 2024, the band are back with a fresh batch of material — including selections from their 2024 synth-heavy Fight Night EP, deep cuts from their 5-album back catalogue and a handful of unreleased tracks.
Drawing from a deep well of influences, The Seven Ups weave funk, psych-rock, spiritual jazz, and synth-heavy rhythms into a swirling blend they’ve dubbed 'cosmic heavy groove.'
Led by multi-instrumentalist Trent Sterling, the group has carved out its own space over five studio albums — deep, exploratory records that move from locked-in rhythm sections to ambient soul textures and long-form psychedelic jams. Their latest release, Fight Night (2024), pushes further into synth territory, layering lush pads and rolling arpeggiators over the band’s trademark brass and percussion.
Opening the night will be special guests, LCO. Led by Melbourne drummer Liam O'Leary (The Seven Ups, Cantrips, Collard Greens and Gravy), LCO brings a fusion of psychedelic groove, afrobeat, jazz, and experimental sounds, performing compositions from their latest album, Triptychs.
Mamma Chen’s acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and the Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation, the true owners of the land that we live and operate on. We would like to pay our respects to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
