The South Australian Aboriginal Italian Forum
Description
Did you know there are over 600 people in South Australia with both Aboriginal and Italian heritage, according to the 2021 Census? Their families sit at the intersection of two rich cultures — and their stories are rarely told together.
Join us for the inaugural South Australian Aboriginal Italian Forum, opening space for conversation between First Peoples and the Italian community whose histories in this state are often deeply and invisibly intertwined. From shared neighbourhoods and workplaces to intermarriage, friendship and solidarity across generations, Aboriginal and Italian South Australians have long crossed paths. Some of what surfaces will be warm and celebratory; some will sit with harder truths.
This forum brings together Elders, community members, historians and storytellers to reflect honestly on that shared history.
The event will take place at the Yitpi Yartapuultiku Centre from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Following the event, a walking tour of the Centre will be offered to the first 40 people who register for the tour. The tour will be led by Aunty Margaret Brodie.
