La Celestina: A Spanish Students' Production
Event description
The Spanish Club and the Spanish Studies Program at the University of Adelaide are collaborating this year to present an adaptation of La Celestina. The play dates back to the 15th century and follows Calisto, a young nobleman who has fallen in love with Melibea. Struggling to win her affection (or even her attention!), he seeks assistance from Celestina, a matchmaker. Celestina manages to bring the two young characters together, but her work leads to all sorts of tragic consequences. But this is not a tragedy, because it also explores themes such as corruption, greed, protocapitalism, friendship, questionable parenting, and love, offering a profound exploration of social dynamics. It is a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance literature (probably) never shown in Adelaide before...until now. Join us to bring this masterpiece to life!
Disclaimer: The adaptation contains subject matters that can be triggering, including sex, sexual assault, murder, and suicide.
