Event description

In an effort to manage family, business and interpersonal relationships, many women fall into the cycle of juggling multiple roles, often at the expense of their own mental, emotional & psychological wellbeing.

For women who are part of a family businesses, the boundaries between life, family and work blur together and are commonly finding themselves in a socially accepted norm of putting others first. According to Sumra and Schillaci (2015), those who identify as a ‘multiple-role woman’ are exceptionally talented and skilled, however in a bid to maintain the status-quo, they experience heightened stress, may exhibit perfectionist tendencies and/or other mental/emotional health conditions.

The past few years of living in a pandemic have put many families and their businesses to the test – but when looking to how the women of such businesses fare, what has it really been like? What are the risks and ‘traps’ of falling into the ‘Superwoman’ role and, how can family and business advisors alike, provide informed care and support?

The Women in Family Business Network and Elston have partnered for this special evening event to provide insights from four exceptional women who have either experienced such challenges or provide executive family business advice to. Held at Elston House in Brisbane (Meanjin) city on Thursday May 26th from 5-7pm AEST, join us for an evening featuring a keynote address and a panel discussion with:

  • Kaitlyn Tregenza (Keynote & Panellist): Kaitlyn has lived a highly unconventional life -- from starting and learning about entrepreneurship from the age of 10, to scaling her first venture at 19 - a children's party service - to pay for university in France, to solo-travelling across the globe and then starting her own pathway of supporting female-owned and run businesses. Kaitlyn has won big and lost big in her own businesses. She knows the importance of an unwavering belief in purpose-driven missions, and believes that radical change comes from empowering, emboldening and allowing the unreasonable and unconventional to be who they are here to be. Kaitlyn is passionate about the heart leading the way, and implements these business philosophies as Director of a number of her own companies, and her newest startup, PhenXX which aims to cure uterus diseases globally. She is an advisor to two early stage funds which invest in female led startups, runs an accelerator for female founders and is herself a dedicated investor in female founded businesses. She is a mother to be, and says it is her most daunting job to date.

  • Julie Dolan (Panellist – KPMG): Julie has spent more than 25 years advising private clients on the legislative application and strategic opportunities that arise with SMSFs. She has deep experience with assisting clients to ensure their estate and incapacity plans are legally tailored as well as optimised in relation to asset protection and tax effectiveness. For many years she has provided strategic and technical support, education, and consulting services to hundreds of accountants, advisers and lawyers around Australia.  Julie is a Mum of three and has previously run her own consulting business.

  • Lynda McKie (Panellist – Elston): Lynda Mckie grew up in a family business. So she understands the dynamics at play when your business partner is your husband or your dad. It’s her experiences in the business and in her family that make her such a great adviser. She is able to empathise with her clients, see the challenges from their perspective, and in turn, help them to picture what’s possible. After 34 years in finance, Lynda’s IQ certainly matches her EQ. She is a Certified Financial Planner who is highly respected thought leader in the industry.
  • Susanne Bransgrove (Host, WIFBN Managing Director): Growing up as part of a third-generation family business, Susanne intimately understands the range of issues that exist when being part of a family business, and trying to meet the needs of multiple generations. As a family business specialist, Managing Director & Founder of WIFBN, Susanne is passionate about supporting other women in family business as they navigate their complex roles and create a positive, lasting legacy.

In combination with a keynote presentation by Kaitlyn Tregenza, the panel will present their insights and share their views on the impact falling into the Superwoman ‘trap’ as well as the challenge of overcoming traditional role(s).
