THE UNSEEN VICTIMS

The Nazi Racial Hierarchy and the Murder of Psychiatric Patients in Nazi-Occupied Europe

Emily Woods' Master's research, 'Unseen Victims: The Nazi Racial Hierarchy and the Murder of Psychiatric Patients in Nazi-Occupied Europe,’ comparatively examines the persecution of neurodiverse people in Nazi-occupied Poland, the USSR, France, and the Netherlands. The talk will specifically focus on the methods of extermination used during this period.

Emily’s thesis argues that the treatment of psychiatric patients in the target countries was ultimately inseparable from the Nazi racial hierarchy, which was the deciding factor in how victims were treated and ultimately killed. By exploring pre-existing societal attitudes toward the mentally ill and the public and medical reception of the pseudo-scientific theory of eugenics, this presentation highlights that the tragic fate of psychiatric patients in these countries was only decided once under Nazi occupation.
