Event description

UC Medical and Counselling Centre is running a FREE weekly psych skill workshop for UC students. Each week one of our Psychologists will work with students on building a new set of skills and the tools to manage a range of challenges students face today – such as goal setting, connecting with others, managing stress, and overcoming procrastination.

The Weekly Psych Session alternates between being presented online and on-campus. If you are attending a session in person, please visit the UC Medical & Counselling Centre reception. If you are attending an online session, the Zoom link is below:

Setting Yourself up for Success at Uni: 

This session will explore how to be ready for the challenges of semester, build positive routines that will protect you from stress, and how to recover if there is a wobble so that you can get back on track.

Feb 13Social Connections - Creating your network:
 This week we will focus on ways to find sources of friends and expand your sense of connection to prevent loneliness and improve wellbeing.  It will be a great chance to meet other students at the start of semester.

Feb 20Purpose:

Today’s session will explore your sense of purpose.  We will take a quiz and discuss ways to revisit this aspect of our lives which is linked to physical and mental health.

Feb 27Social Connections - Joining in and initiating: 
Today we will speak about how to overcome shyness, and create and maintain your social connections by initiating conversations and get togethers.

March 6Sleep hygiene and progressive muscle relaxation: 
This session will help you learn and practice ways to unwind and get good quality rest.

March 13Social Connections - Deepening and maintaining connections:
This session will explore ways to grow closer to others and how to repair difficulties along the way.

March 20Practicing Consent:
As part of Respect Week on campus, today we will get into the nitty gritty of how and when to seek consent.  We will work together to identify phrases and language that could work for you to ease any awkwardness when negotiating boundaries with others.

March 27Managing Procrastination (with Emily): 
Today's conversation will explore why procrastination occurs and explore practical strategies to help you get things done.

April 3Coping with Unwanted Thoughts and Feelings: 
Today’s session will focus on using acceptance to allow negative thoughts to exist without fighting with them. This strategy can allow us to refocus on what matters to us.
